ADHD Therapy Cost

By Kristen McClure, MSW, LCSW

One of the first questions most people have about therapy is: how much does it cost, and will my insurance cover it? Here's everything you need to know about working with me.

Insurance

I am a private-pay therapist and do not bill insurance directly. This is a deliberate choice — it allows me to keep sessions focused on your actual needs rather than what insurance will cover, and it protects your privacy (insurance-billed diagnoses become part of your permanent health record).

However, many insurance plans offer out-of-network (OON) benefits for mental health services. If yours does, I can provide a superbill — a detailed receipt you submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Depending on your plan, you may be reimbursed for a significant portion of the session cost.

How to Check Your Out-of-Network Benefits

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

  • "Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?"
  • "What is my out-of-network deductible, and has any of it been met?"
  • "What percentage of the allowed amount do you reimburse for outpatient psychotherapy (CPT code 90837)?"
  • "Do I need a referral to see an out-of-network provider?"

Is Therapy Worth the Cost?

This is a real question and worth taking seriously. For many women with ADHD, untreated or under-treated ADHD costs far more over time — in lost jobs, strained relationships, health impacts from chronic stress, and years spent struggling with shame and self-doubt. Therapy that actually addresses the root patterns — not just surface-level coping tips — tends to have lasting effects.

That said, $110 per session is a real number. If cost is a barrier, please mention it when you reach out. I maintain a small number of reduced-fee spots and will always be honest with you about what I can offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ADHD therapy cost in North Carolina and South Carolina?

My sessions are $110 for a 55-minute individual session. I work via telehealth across North Carolina and South Carolina.

Do you take insurance?

I am private-pay and do not bill insurance directly. I can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement, which many clients use to recover a portion of session costs through their insurance plan.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt that includes the diagnostic codes, procedure codes, and session information your insurance needs to process an out-of-network claim. I provide these upon request.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

I maintain a small number of reduced-fee spots for clients who need them. If cost is a barrier, please mention it when you reach out and we can talk honestly about what's possible.

How often do I need to come to therapy?

Most clients start with weekly sessions. As things stabilize, some shift to every other week. We'll figure out a pace that makes sense for you and your budget.
