Toddler cries continuously around other children and certain adults

by Seema
(Vancouver, BC)

Why does my 21 month old toddler cry around other children especially when the other toddlers or babies make any sound/talk etc?

She cries uncontrollably.
She also cries around certain adults. She feels more comfortable around woman (but loves her dad).
She cries when we take her to the doctor or dentist. Even before the doctor comes into the waiting room she already starts to cry uncontrollably.

She does not like for any medical/dental/anyone who she does not know to touch her.

She also cries uncontrollaby when other babies or toddlers cry.

I become very worried and anxious when she goes through this.

How can I help my child?

She behaves well around the home.
She may see people more than 3-4 times, but she still cries when she sees them. She calms down when she does not see them.

Please help

Hi Seema

It sounds like you daughter is experiencing stranger anxiety. Usually this has peaked and is over with around 15 months. I would suggest that perhaps you getting distressed about it is distressing her. I would carefully explain and prepare her as you are going to see new people, remind her of how she knows the people you are seeing that you have already met, and let others know that she has some anxiety. I would be careful to let others know to be considerate of her issues.

I am not sure about the crying when other toddlers make noise. It may be part of the same issue or may be some kind of a sign of sensory integration issues. Perhaps it would help to get her evaluated by and Occupational Therapist

Good Luck to you
