Question
My daughter is 6 years old and has recently been showing signs of anxiety. Her hands shake when trying to do things and she has trouble going to sleep. She says she can't stop thinking. She doesn't eat very well. I suffer from severe anxiety and am on medication. I was the same way she is as as child. I need to know how to help her. I see the same symptoms in her that I feel.

Answer

Hi Misty

The only way I know to help her is to get her evaluated by a professional, someone who works with small children, and understands anxiety. I would be careful to ask them about their experience and their philosophy and ensure they have a good understanding of how to help children with anxiety. It's important for you to meet with at least three people, so you can get a feel for who is the most knowledgeable and the best fit for your child.

You daughter's issues you may unknowingly be reinforcing through your own anxiety. For example, parents who are anxious will frequently reinforce the use of avoidance with is at the core of anxiety. A professional can teach you how not to do these things and can teach her how to recognize and deal with the symptoms in her body and mind ! Good luck Misty

Sincerely
