Izzy's Mother

My four year old has always been on the anxious side, but I never thought much about it taking it at just part of her personality.

But recently it has gotten worse. Last night she threw up at the idea of going to the babysitters the following day only simply saying over and over again that she didn't want to go down the water slide. Whenever we do something that she has a problem with, say like going through the car wash, she doesn't just get scared she gets terrified like someone is trying to kill her or something. I am just wondering if it is just her personality or something more.

If your daughter's behavior is getting in the way of her ability to have friends, succeed at developmentally appropriate tasks, or is interfering significantly in the family routine, than I would say you need to investigate a play therapist as an option. I think throwing up seems pretty significant. Additionally it may be important to look at having her evaluated for sensory integration issues.

Furthermore, if there is a family history of anxiety than I feel it would be important to explore a play therapist as well. Many anxiety disorders are genetic. The earlier you can teach children skills to manage their anxiety the better.

If you have insurance check out the list of providers, and then interview them to insure they have experience with both child anxiety and young children. This is important because often providers wont make this distinction ( and insurance companies don't either) if they are in need of clients, and you don't want someone unskilled working with your child.

There is evidence that children who have a certain personality are more prone to anxiety, so they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive!

Good luck
