Highly oppositional child

by Tired Dad
(Charlotte)

Hello. Our 8 year old is an excellent student and does well at soccer. At home he is often out of control. Defiant, disrespectful, beginning to physically lash out. He will oppose just about anything, even when it is something he wants. He typically has to disobey in some small way, such as, if he's to clean his room he'll purposely leave something right on the floor in plain sight. When younger, when told to sit on the naughty step, he'd sit on the floor below the step. He negotiates everything. He seems to have high anxiety as well. He was tested and diagnosed with ADHD and is taking medication, which has helped, especially at school. But he is getting worse. Thinking about a psychologist or psychiatrist to help us help him. Advice? Thank you.

Hi tired dad

I think that is a good idea, seeking a psychologist or psychiatrist to help him.

Southeast psychological may be a good place for that kind of issue as I see you are in Charlotte.

Ross Greene has written books that may help you utilizing collaborative problem solving and also love and logic parenting may be a great way to go with your child. You can google this at amazon.

Good luck to you

Sincerely
